Run Linux Vm On Mac

  1. The original solution to running Docker on OS X and Windows was Docker Toolkit. This was actually a Linux virtual machine running in the VirtualBox Hypervisor. The VM had Docker installed and could run containers. Docker Desktop for Mac still makes use of a virtual machine running Linux running in the HyperKit Hypervisor.
  2. It is better to use a static MAC address for Linux running on Hyper-V especially if your Linux VM needs to be migrated between Hyper-V hosts. Right click your VM name and click Settings. In the Settings window, select your network adapter, and expand the network adapter options by clicking the + icon.

Linux to Mac

Run Linux Vm On MacMac

So, of course you could run it in a VM in Linux, but only if your Linux machine was actually a Mac which would be rather pointless. They only alternative I'm aware of would be to use a cloud instance & the only one of those I've really heard of though never used is MacinCloud.

If you are moving from Linux to the Mac, you'll find a BASH shelland a set of Unix command line utilities available to make you feel athome. If you need a complete Linux environment for development orspecial applications, you can run Linux in a virtual machine (VM) usingVMware Fusion.

Fusion Basics

Version 1.0 of VMware Fusion was released on August 1, 2007. Theshipping version as of this writing is 1.1.1. Fusion only works onIntel-based Macs. It builds on the experience of VMware in the Windowsand Linux market. It is comparable in features to VMware workstation, and to its competitor in the Mac market, Parallels.

This is far from the dream of simply dual-booting Linux on an M1 Mac, and you might be better off using Parallels or other virtual machines (when they’re ready) to run other operating systems. Run the “autorun.sh” shell script in the Guest Additions directory. Sudo sh autorun.sh. Let the script install the VirtualBox Guest Additions into your VM. When the process is done, reboot the VM. Increase cores in VM. Casual virtual box users who set up a Linux VM do not think about CPU cores.

VMware sells Fusion primarily as a Windows-on-Mac solution. You havedig into the details to learn that it also supports Linux, Solaris,FreeBSD, and other Intel operating systems as guests.

While beta versions suffered with performance issues, the latestversion is relatively snappy running different flavors of Linux. Icurrently have Centos 5.1 andUbuntu 7.10 running nicely underOS X. Full screen support works as expected. VMware supplies extrasoftware called VMware tools that improves video and mouse performance.Installation of VMware tools in a Linux guest works exactly as on otherhost operating systems.

Jump Start with Appliances

One of the advantages of the VMware universe is the availability ofvirtual appliances. Appliances are prebuilt virtual machines that canbe downloaded and run with no installation or configuration. Manycompanies provide special purpose appliances as either demonstrationsor deployable applications. There are also hundreds of user providedvirtual machines with a variety of Linux distributions, making it easyto try out different flavors of Linux without much work.

Fusion can run virtual machines created on the Windows and Linuxversions of VMware. I downloaded and tried several appliances and hadno problems.

Virtual Appliances and Security

The ease of downloading and running appliances can be a two-edgedsword. Keep in mind that a virtual machine is essentially a completelyconfigured computer system that you are booting up on your network.Depending on how it was created, each appliance may have the sameaccess to the network as your host system - and it may also havelimited access to host system files.

For user created appliances, you should at least regenerate thesystem SSH keys and limit access to the network unless you trust thesource. A trojaned virtual machine is another vector to get malwareinside a network. Be aware of the risks.

The Competition

The main competitor to Fusion is Parallels, a company that gained alot of traction by being first out of the gate with a high performancevirtualization solution for the Intel-based Mac. Parallels was alsopriced below the VMware offerings on Windows and Linux. However, VMwarehas matched the Parallels price (currently $79) for their Macsolution.

Since I don't have Parallels, I can't compare the two products.

VMware does have a fully functional 30-day trial, while Parallelsdoes not at this time. (Note: I have no financial or other relationshipwith either company.)

VMs Are Future Compatible

Some of the benefits of taking Linux with you to OS X are obvious. You can create an exact replica of a production server environment fortesting and development. You can safely test new software and roll backto before installation if things don't work out as expected. It alsolets you test multiple client environments on one system.

Virtual machines have been around since the 1960s on mainframes, where they have been part of the high reliability and performanceequation. Modern microprocessors provide the needed hardware supportfor virtualization, and it is becoming a common part of computingenvironments at all levels.

It is interesting that Apple does not allow OS X to be a guestoperating system. My guess is that OS X is designed for specificsets of hardware, not to handle any old motherboard or collection ofhardware thrown at it like Linux (and to some extent Windows). Thismeans OS X might not perform well in a virtualized environment.Apple probably has other reasons, too, but it would be nice to seeOS X as a guest in the future.
